Laser tattoo removal is a relatively simple procedure that can produce some astonishing results, depending on the type of tattoo (amateur or professional) and the ink colour or colours within the tattoo. The treatment works very simply: lasers remove tattoos by breaking down the pigment within the tattoo, lightening the skin and minimising the appearance of the tattoo. With repeated treatments, tattoos can vanish completely. Some tattoos are easier to remove than others.

What Happens During Treatment?
During laser tattoo removal, skin will be cleansed and a local anaesthetic cream may be applied. You’ll be given goggles to wear. The practitioner will then pass the laser over the surface of the tattoo. Treatment can vary depending on the size of the tattoo. After treatment, patients are advised to take care of the skin, using a high factor SPF sunscreen whilst the skin is still sensitive as well as a tissue repair cream. Patients will experience a mild pricking sensation during treatment, but we can use local anaesthetic creams to minimise discomfort. Over the counter pain medication will minimise any pain following treatment.
Commonly Asked Questions about Tattoo Removal
Q: HOW DOES THE Q-SWITCHED LASER WORK?
The laser emits a pulse of light that is preferentially absorbed into certain colours of ink. The light enters the skin at a speed that is too fast to heat the tissues (billionths of a second), instead, it produces a ‘shockwave’ effect and breaks up the ink particles into smaller pieces, the body then recognizes these particles as something that shouldn’t be there and attacks it. The particles are then removed naturally via the body’s own elimination system.
Q: WHAT KIND OF TATTOOS CAN BE TREATED?
We can treat professional and amateur tattoos, traumatic tattoos resulting from accidents, and cosmetic tattoos.
Q: CAN THE Q-SWITCH LASER REMOVE ALL COLOR TATTOOS?
The Q-Switched Nd: YAG Laser works best on: Blue, Black, Blue/Black, Red, Green, and Yellow.
Q: HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?
The number of treatments may vary depending upon the size, color and location of the tattoo. We will work with you to develop a treatment plan.
Q: WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING THE TREATMENT?
Pain tolerance varies from person to person. Many describe the treatment as a rubberband snap to skin. Although no anesthesia is required, topical anesthetic can be requested for sensitive areas.
Q: WHAT CAN I EXPECT AFTER THE TREATMENT?
We will give you specific post-treatment instructions. While your skin may be slightly red immediately after the procedure, this should resolve within a few hours. You can resume your normal activities immediately following the treatment.
